This Mushroom Gravy is perfect for your holiday table. Serve on the side of your main dish or on top of your mashed potatoes to level up your meal.
Key Ingredient
Aside from mushrooms, the key ingredient to this recipe is the low sodium tamari. The tamari gives the gravy a depth of flavor and umami. If you are gluten free, make sure you get a tamari that is gluten free certified. If you are not gluten free, low sodium soy can be used to substitute the tamari.
Vegan
If you are wanting a vegan gravy, simply use a low sodium vegetable broth. Alternatively, low sodium chicken broth can be used if you are not vegan.
Gluten Free
This recipe is easily made gluten free by using a gluten free flour blend to thicken the gravy. I have tested this recipe with both all purpose flour and a gluten free flour blend. There was no difference in flavor or texture between the two different flours. The gluten free flour blend that I use is Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Baking Flour.
Mushrooms
Any mushroom can really be used in this gravy. I have used both Baby Bella and White Button. My partner, who hated mushrooms when we first met, absolutely loves this gravy. I think a lot of people do not like mushrooms because they are not preparing them well. For this recipe, start by cleaning off the mushrooms with a wet towel. Heat oil, over medium heat, in a sauce pan. Add the mushrooms to a hot pan and cook until evenly browned, almost caramelized, and softened. This will take about 10 minutes.
